Dogs and Personal Security.

As man's best friend dogs have been obliged the responsibility of watching over us and our terrain. What better good could a real friend do than to watch his colleagues back in time of impending danger! However their level of loyalty to us are bound by some factors in their discharge of duty. A guard dog is one used to watch against unwanted people or animal in a terrain while an attack dog is a dog trained by human to defend or attack persons on command or by situation assessment .

When I tell people that not all dogs can and will work security I get various responses like "why are they called dog then" ,and my response is "Can all men that can fight in a ring?". Listed below are some of the factors that add up to make a dog a formidable security dog .

Temperament
All dogs have their individuality just as we their companions also do. Buying a German Shepherd does not automatically guarantee its ability to protect. Temperament in a dog is firstly a function of genetics then training .

Genetics
To select a security dog , make it an obligation to get your dogs from parents with proven record of security instinct . Make enquiries about the Sire and the Dam of the pup you are getting . Go the extra mile of having a human decoy test them in and out of their territory to see if they will protect effectively . If the parents are not capable don't expect any magic from the offspring. It frees you a lot of headache when you know of a dogs ancestral prowess before selecting.

Training
Now that you have selected your dog from proven breed and gene pool..... Alas! You can't take a man to a war theater without adequately training him . in training a dog for security we have to test the dog if it have the drives for protection . Dogs attack and defend under three major drives which are :

1. PREY DRIVE: this is the ability of a dog to pursue an object , animate or inanimate . During puppy hood some pups loves chasing balls , frisby and nyla bones . They just want to play the game of chase or fetch with their owner, you throw a ball and they follow. This trait goes on into adolescent, they love chasing lizards and birds. This aforementioned traits is what go on to become the ability of a dog to pursue a human decoy or an actual human threat . If you dog won't chase from puppy hood it is more likely that he won't chase that thief or intruder.

2. FIGHT DRIVE: This particular drive comes into play mostly during adolescent  , it could show early or late . A dog that loves playing tug of war (dragging clothes and ropes with you) is exhibiting traits of fight drive . If he will fight for a piece of cloth then chances are high that he will fight for your life when trained to do so.

3. Defense drive: A dog that naturally stands its ground in an unknown terrain , a dog that barks and stay when threatened is a dog that have nerves. This is the ability not to back out when engaged by a human decoy or an actual assailant. Some dog will fight and run away due to weak nerves while a great dog will stand its ground defensively . This drive is displayed mostly during adulthood but with the help of an experienced trainer puppies reaction to sharp sound like car honk and slippers tap could tell if a dog will perform in this drive effectively .

Now that you have been educated , it all narrows down to choose your breed , get your dogs from good breeding stocks and possibly have an experienced  trainer help you test that dogs drive .
